Oracle announces that its autonomous database is now generally available on Microsoft Azure. This is another step the company is taking to dismantle the “walled garden of different cloud providers.” It is the second Oracle database to run on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and is initially available in the US East region of Microsoft Azure through the Oracle Database@Azure program. There are plans to eventually expand to more data centers in 2024. The technology enables organizations to accelerate application development and migrate on-premises workloads and infrastructure to the cloud.

With Microsoft Azure integration, businesses using this managed equivalent of Oracle database It will also benefit from access to the Azure portal and related APIs. It runs on real application clusters running on Oracle’s Exadata Cloud infrastructure, so workloads are secure, scalable, and high-performance. They receive all the capabilities but do not have to deal with any maintenance.

Another advantage is that Oracle Autonomous Database requires fewer resources, making it accessible to more companies. The lowest entry point uses two ECPUs, or two compute cores, so it’s affordable for small and medium-sized businesses. It can also process different types of data, including tabular relational data, documents, and vector data, which is useful when dealing with artificial intelligence.

“There is a lot of interest from organizations to leverage this type of technology that is a core part of this offering,” Liu Leung, vice president of product and strategy at Oracle, tells VentureBeat. “It has additional built-in tools for Low-code application developmentand data modeling and data processing for analytics. Lots of rich capabilities, as you might expect, from a database that’s been in development for several decades.

Below is a list of the benefits customers gain through this Oracle-Microsoft integration:

  • Ability to build new cloud-native applications using OCI and Azure technologies, including the rich set of Azure development services and AI
  • Flexible options to simplify and accelerate the migration of Oracle databases to the cloud, including compatibility with proven migration tools such as Oracle Zero-Downtime Migration
  • The highest level of Oracle database performance, scale, and availability, with feature and pricing parity with OCI
  • Simplicity, security, and low latency to build solutions integrated with autonomous database and Azure services
  • Align with on-premises deployments of Oracle Database and Oracle Exadata to reduce the need to redesign or refactor solutions
  • Unified customer experience and support from Oracle and Microsoft
  • Simplified purchasing process and ability to take advantage of Oracle and Microsoft licenses, commitments, and rebate programs
  • Ensure a unified service and architecture that is tested and supported by two of the most trusted names in the cloud

“We worked with [Microsoft] “We’ve been working on connecting our clouds together for years,” Leung says. A recent example of this The collaboration is Oracle Database@Azure, an extension that brings services running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to Azure. “We think it’s a unique offering. “We’re not aware of any other cloud providers doing this where we’re expanding our capabilities within another cloud,” he says. “The rationale behind it is that while we still have an interconnection with Microsoft , there are a bunch of use cases that require our physical infrastructure to be close together – it’s “speed of light” type things – where we need to achieve sub-millisecond latency, and the only way to do that is to be next to each other.

For business leaders, Leung says the autonomous database represents a “huge opportunity” for those with a beachhead in the Microsoft cloud. Organizations can take their existing data, put it inside Azure Database, anonymize it, route it, and keep it all in the same infrastructure. Then, they can integrate it with tools like Azure OpenAI, training the AI on their own data and public big language models to enhance enterprise knowledge bases or provide better customer support. “The combination of being able to create really good responses using enterprise data in a confidential way is what a lot of organizations are excited about…Oracle manages a huge amount of enterprise private data, both on-premises, in our cloud, and now in Microsoft Azure. Combining these things with the Azure suite of services, we believe it represents a huge opportunity for Microsoft customers.

Customers who want to use Oracle Autonomous Database can do so through a “Special Offer” at Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
