Thursday, deadThe proprietary app introduced the ability to restrict your live streaming close friends List only. You can still live stream with up to three people, but they all must be in your close circle of friends.
It’s nice to be able to control who sees what you post in any format, but I’m not sure what specifically this could be used for. Instagram told TechCrunch Users can use it to “share what’s on your mind, connect spontaneously with friends, share memes, plan trips, do homework together, or just hang out in real time.”

But there are actually really great apps and platforms that allow you to do these things better. We share memes, plan trips in group chats, do our homework together via FaceTime, and have the occasional real-life hangout in real time. So, this new update seems a bit like a solution in search of a problem.
Live streaming, a feature launched in 2016, is mostly used by public figures, celebrities, and influencers to communicate with fans. Casual users don’t use this feature much because it involves immediate necessity which is not always a natural situation with the platform. The platform seems to be betting on change, enticing ordinary people to use this feature as social media users become more and more interested in individual and private ways of communicating.
If you want to try it for yourself, click the “+” button to share on Instagram and then scroll to live. At the top of your screen, something like “Share with followers” will appear with a down arrow. Click that, choose “Close Friends,” and start recording to go live.
